How can we encourage people to take more responsibility for their own safety?

We know that just taking a compliance approach doesn’t work; people will ignore even physical safety barriers to save time; the peer group has an enormous impact on what becomes acceptable safety standards; and you can’t create a safety procedure for everything that occurs in the workplace.

A decision about whether to work safely is made considering 3 dimensions –
• the organisational rules, practices, procedures – corporate communication (What are they telling me?);
• learning/training to shift the way workers think through motivational techniques to enhance safety awareness, and by understanding their own psychology and brain functions (What do I think?);
• and the third dimension that is often missed is the social one and the role that peer pressure, or peer power, plays in driving safe practices (What will my mates think?).

SafetyLeads is an innovative behavioural based safety training program that encompasses all three dimensions and is designed to improve safety outcomes by focusing on culture, teams and individual behaviours.
