HAZARD A GUESS
Did you know that 15 young workers aged between 15 to 25 are injured each day while working.
WorkCover NSW have developed an interactive eLearning tool called “Hazard a Guess” to help young workers learn about workplace health & safety.
This training tool is a great way to engage young workers using a ‘game show’ style environment. The game show covers topics such as slips, trips & falls, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), manual handling and the workplace environment. As the ‘contestant’ selects a topic and dollar amount, they are presented with a scenario in which they must make decisions about what actions to take.
Hazard a Guess is a fantastic tool that is available online or by ordering a CD-ROM.

SAFE WORK DRIVING STRATEGY
Employers have a duty of care to their employees which includes time spent on the road driving for work purposes. Road related incidents are the largest cause of injury and absence from work and the NSW RTA has identified work related driving as a key area in which the road toll can be reduced. As part of their 2010 Road Safety Strategy, they are working with organisations to promote safer work driving practices which will benefit an organisation from an occupational health and safety perspective and substantially reduce costs for industry.
The following statistics have been quoted from the Roads and Traffic Authority (NSW) website:
"Did you know ....
- - Road crashes make up the most common types of work related deaths in Australia and also the largest cause of injury and absence from work.
- - Research shows that 27 per cent of work vehicles are involved in crashes each year, of which, each incident costs organisations almost $2000. Total costs allowing for indirect costs such as injuries and replacement vehicles can be much higher.
- - As well as the psychological effects from workplace road trauma it can also result in lost revenue, lower productivity, increased worker compensation claims and higher insurance premiums."
The RTA have a range of resources available on their website to help your organisation implement a safe work driving strategy.

ASBESTOS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Contractors are often called to domestic premises to clean/paint a roof, undertake renovations or install plumbing or wiring. It's important that tradespeople know what to do when they suspect the material being worked on contains asbestos.
Private contractors have had to pay clean-up bills in excess of $100 000 because preventative actions were not taken before commencing a job.
Ignoring your legal obligations won't just cost you the decontamination and clean up bill. You could also face up to a $75 000 fine or one years' gaol as an individual, or $375 000 for a corporation.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is offering free information sessions throughout Queensland for obligation holders including builders, contractors and other trade services. The sessions will focus on safe work procedures and legal requirements to keep you, and those around you, safe when working with materials expected to contain asbestos.
