NATIONAL OHS LEGISLATION UPDATE

With January 2012 fast approaching, the Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council is set to approve the model WHS Regulations package this month and States and Territories are slowly starting to pass the new leglisation through Parliament.  We have put a new update on our website which is a State & Territory update which is a summary of information from each of their websites all on one page.

To support the Model Work Health and Safety Act, Safe Work Australia, in conjunction with the National Mine Safety Framework (NMSF) have now released draft model Work Health and Safety Regulations, model Codes of Practice, a Consultation Regulation Impact Statement and Issues Paper for public comment.

Amendments have been made to the current version of the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act (revised 23 June 2011).  This current version of the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act incorporates technical amendments made since November 2010.

Additional draft model Codes of Practice are currently under development and will be released for public comment during 2011.  The list of the proposed second stage draft model Codes of Practice is available on our National OHS legislation update page or via the Safe Work Australia website.

THE SKELETON PROJECT - BARING THE BONES ON WORKPLACE SAFETY

WorkSafe Victoria have launched a new web-based campaign ‘The Skeleton Project – baring the bones on workplace safety’.  The Skeleton Project takes an interesting look into three workplaces as three leading Victorian CEOs go undercover within their company in the guise of a workplace safety researcher, to find out more about musculoskeletal injuries.

The three episodes can be downloaded from the WorkSafe Victoria website along with a range of resources to give employers tips and ideas on how to stimulate constructive health & safety discussion within the workplace.

CHANGES TO WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICERS (WHSOS) QLD

QLD workplaces with more than 30 workers are still required to have access to a WHSO for the remainder of 2011.  Workplace Health & Safety Queensland (WHSQ) have released information on transition arrangements for WHSOs recertification that falls due on or after 13 May 2011.

As from 1 January 2012, the current legislative requirement for employers to appoint WHSOs will cease in Queensland.  WHSQ expect that many businesses will voluntarily retain their WHSOs as they provide valuable assistance to businesses in meeting their duties under current workplace health and safety laws and can continue to do so under the new harmonised laws.

NATIONAL SAFE WORK AUSTRALIA WEEK 23-29 OCTOBER 2011

National Safe Work Australia Week is in its seventh year and will be celebrated this year from 23 to 29 October 2011.  National Safe Work Australia Week aims to raise awareness of workplace safety and this years theme is "Putting safety in the spotlight".

Now is a good time to start thinking about activities and events that your business can get involved in that will encourage everyone to think about workplace safety.  We have put a list of ideas on our website, but if you don't want to organise your own event, most work health and safety authorities in each state or territory organise a range of interesting events as part of their own work health and safety weeks.
