NATIONAL OHS LEGISLATION UPDATE

The public comment period for the draft model WHS Regulations and model Codes of Practice commenced on 7 December 2010 and closed on Monday 4 April 2011.  Public comment submissions, can be found on the public comment page of the Safe Work Australia website.

The current version of the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act (revised 26 November 2010) incorporates technical amendments as noted by Safe Work Australia Members at the Members' meeting of 2 December 2010. A copy of the Act is available to download from the Safe Work Australia website. 

The 12 Draft Model Codes of Practice documents and the Draft WHS Regulations are currently available to download from the Safe Work Australia.

SAFE WORK AUSTRALIA RESPONDS TO CONCERNS ABOUT MODEL WORK HEALTH AND SAFETY REGULATIONS 

Safe Work Australia Chair, Mr Tom Phillips AM, announced the objective of the harmonisation process is not to reduce the size of Work Health and Safety regulation but to ensure uniform safety standards are in place in each jurisdiction throughout Australia.

WORKSAFE VICTORIA ANNOUNCES NEW AGENT PANEL TO MANAGE PREMIUM & CLAIMS STRATEGY

WorkSafe Victoria announced on 7 April 2011 the panel of Agents to manage its premium and claims from 1 July 2011.

WorkSafe Victoria's Chief Executive, Greg Tweedly, said this follows a comprehensive expression-of-interest and tender process which began in July last year.

The new agency agreement will be part of a package aimed at further improving services to Victorian employers & injured workers while ensuring scheme viability.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has released a new guide for the loved ones of workers killed at work. 

This guide includes important information on where to seek help and answers including the roles of the Queensland Police Service, unions, the State Coroner and WHSQ.

The guide also includes information on funeral arrangements, superannuation and workers compensation.

SAFETY SIGNAGE SCAM ALERT

Comcare warns employers to be extra vigilant about scam callers selling OHS posters which they claim must be displayed in all workplaces.

The company telephones organisations and claims to be contracted by the government. The caller advises that all Australian employers are legally obliged to purchase the charts, at a cost of $59.95, as part of the new OHS legislation.

This alleged scam is being investigated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
